Thanks for stopping by to take a look at our very cool 1970 Mercury Cougar. This original Oregon car is an excellent, rust free example of which there are very few left. Fresh respray in Jet Black, she really stands out.
Conceived as a sister car to Ford’s Mustang, the Cougar was the refined older brother. Provided with plenty of go fast from the legendary 351 Cleveland mill and superior ride and handling, the Cougar was for those who had arrived.
Mustangs, Camaros and Mopars are fairly common at the show and shine but seeing a Cougar in the wild is relatively rare. And it’s certainly nice driving something different from the crowd.
The Gen 2 Cougar was only made for two years, 1969 and 1970. Most were driven hard and relatively few remain in the wild today. This rare-ish 70 model is particularly hard to duplicate with it’s laser straight body and Cleveland mill all presented in triple black. Our research shows few cars of this caliber are available at this price.
Fresh repaint in factory correct Black. We painted her in (not OEM) two stage, clear over color. The paint work was done in what we call the “proper” method of refinishing. This is not to be confused with the inexpensive method. We removed all of the trim, the complete interior, glass, etc. to get a proper finish on the car. The paint has been color sanded, polished and buffed to a high sheen. Excellent panel fit. New, correct Levant grain top. Headlamp doors operate correctly and stay shut. Sequential tail lights operate as designed. Dropped stance and attitude for days.
OEM high back bucket seats and rear bench have been upholstered in Black and are soft and supple. New headliner, sail panels and package tray. New carpet. Excellent panels. Rim Blow OEM steering wheel.
Custom Autosound digital AM FM radio with 6X9 speakers
Floors are original and solid. See the restoration photos when the factory carpet was removed. We pulled the build sheet from under the seat on this one.
Massive 20 inch Ridler 695 wheels in the back with 18 x 9 in the front. New tires.
The legendary 351 Cleveland engine runs like a top. Edelbrock Manifold. 4BBL. High top aluminum valve covers. Power steering. Power Disc Brakes..
Automatic FMX transmission.
Front power disc brakes and rear drum brakes. New chrome booster.
Fresh service, plugs, tune. Turnkey and ready to go.
The trim is in good to excellent shape. See pics and video.
Solid and clean with no evidence of damage or rust repair. See the photos.
Glass in great shape throughout. Tint added.
The odometer shows 26,950 miles. We do not believe this to be accurate.

There are a few first gen Cougars for sale at any given time. The boxy early cars from 67 and 68 have their fans but the sleek look of the 69 and 70 bodies really was the high point for these cars. The vast majority of Cougars were produced with the 351 Windsor engine. The clearly superior 351 Cleveland was available in limited supply and is still sought after as the best choice aside from the big block monsters. There are always the stock appearing vehicles cherished by the purists. (We have one too) Find one like this in excellent condition with great eye appeal and you have a very few cars indeed. We believe this triple black Cougar represents an outstanding value that can be enjoyed immediately as well as being an appreciating investment in automotive art.
Spy vs Spy
Yes, we had some fun with our pair of pointy nosed Cougars. While they are a lot alike, we think these two cars have enough subtle differences to make them appeal to different types of owners. Our White Spy is a highly optioned XR7 preserved in an original state of just 56,000 miles. Angelic almost. Black Spy went the other way and cast off from 1970’s style with an update to a more modern, menacing look. Definitely not angelic. We’d like to sell them as a pair but most people don’t need two.
Please come inspect this great car before the listing ends. We are happy to meet you and show her off. The details contained in this listing are based on our review of the vehicle and any errors or omissions are unintentional. Please keep in mind that this is a 48 year old used car. It is not a new car and will not be fresh and perfect like that new soul sucking Camry your Aunt Betty drives. If that’s what you are after, this is not your era, nor your car.
